SECTION 1: Willunga to Louds Hill Rd

10.7 km Moderate Hike Grade 3

MAP SECTION 1

FROM: the junction of St Andrews Terrace & High St, Willunga, SA 5172

TO: the intersection of Louds Hill Rd, Range Rd West, & Mt Terrible Rd, Pages Flat, SA 5172

From the section end post at the intersection of High St and St Andrews Terrace travel south along St Andrews Terrace towards the tunnel under the Victor Harbor Rd. Go through the tunnel using the pavement on the western side and immediately turn right.

A path follows the edge of the Victor Harbor Rd, at first through trees and then next to the fence on the roadside. After a kilometre, with a good outlook to the coast, you reach a stile. Climb this onto Martin Rd which leads up to Colville Rd. You will find The Farm on the corner, a charming place to eat, open Friday to Sunday.

Turn right onto Colville Rd and follow it using the wide verge, to Delabole Rd. Turn left up Delabole Rd. Soon you start a steady climb which goes all the way to the top.

2.7 kms up Delabole Rd, there is an interesting short spur track to view the old Delabole settlement and slate quarry. This is where Cornish miners, who came to quarry the Willunga slate, lived. Their Chapel, which has been beautifully restored as a private residence, is nearby.

After returning to Delabole Rd, continue to the top and turn right along Range Rd West. Walk along the top of the Range to the intersection with Wakefield Rd and continue right, on Range Rd West, now unsealed. Soon you will have views across to Aldinga and the coast, as well as the country on the southern side of the Range. After passing some rural properties you reach the section end post at the intersection of Range Rd West, Louds Hill Rd and Mt Terrible Rd.
